Senior Year Already?!?

This summer was pretty boring, if I’m being completely honest. It seems like all I did was work and laze about the house. I don’t recall even travelling anywhere (aside from school, but that doesn’t count). Granted, the summer could definitely have been more exhausting if I worked more frequently, but I don’t know. Maybe it’s something about it being my last summer at home before graduating from college and starting life in the real world. Just…something felt weird and off all summer long. My parents kept pushing my siblings to play games with me or hang out with me, always threatening them that “It’s Jackie’s last summer at home!” It felt like they were saying that I was never going to come home again—like I was going to move away and never visit them. Obviously, that would never happen. Unfortunately, I like my family too much.

Work this summer was surprisingly fine. In previous years, I despised working at the convenience store. I hated how long my days were there and I especially didn’t like cleaning shelves or the windows or anything like that. But this year, I was fine with it. Beth’s food was good, as always, and she even added a few new Filipino desserts to the rotation. I’m a big fan of the ube crinkle cookies, but she had ube brazo de graham and vanilla berry pudding that was very good as well. I still was upset every time a customer came in and asked me if I was new, despite me working there (legally) since I was 16. I could call a guy by name and he would still come up to the counter and ask, “Oh, when did you start working here?” Also, at one point, the owners’ son introduced me as “the daughter of one of their part-timers” which didn’t sit well with me because 1) my family and I are the only part-timers at the store, and 2) I WORK THERE TOO. But other than that, it was pretty much ok.

I have a few goals for this upcoming semester that I would like to accomplish.

  • Participate in Strings and Things more. I was kind of busy last semester so I didn’t get to go as often as I would have liked
  • Stay on top of schoolwork. This may be hard due to my work schedule, but I’m sure I can do it.
  • Advocate for myself if I have to. If work (at the caf) gets to be too much, I will have to have a conversation with Emma. I won’t like it, but I have to be willing to do it.
  • Get at least a AB in all of my classes. This may be difficult as I’m taking a lot of advanced classes, but I think I can do it. I will settle for a B in Business Law.
  • Complete at least one more project for the TechBar

That’s all my goals for now. I may think up a few later, but for now that looks good. Here’s to a great semester!
